Interesting. That could make a nice double-header weekend with the Durango contest. Only about a 4 hour drive between the two.

Fri, Sat, Sun, Mon. road trip. That has potential for teams and both organizers. 3 hours 30 min, 203 miles. (map quest) Steve

You think the wind still blows as hard in July? Actually I would take the heat over the wind any day. I think it is a very smart move on their part.

If they can replace the heaters in the Judge's tent with A/C units - AND keep that poor tent up for the event! - Lizzie Q might ponder a return to Rio Well, that and very little chance of having to escape over Raton in front of an Albuquerque Low ... Laura "Not Their Worst Idea!" Jay Lizzie Q

Considering all the "known" facts at this time, I might actually consider going back to Rio Rancho in July and doing Durango for the first time, (which includes Durango doing something about the street situation, even though I haven't heard any problems concerning the 2010 event). Being retired, it actually sounds like a good five day road trip with a couple of bbq comps in the mix of the trip. I can see it happening. Congrats to Rio Rancho for moving their event to a different date and doing the process early. I thought that I'd heard that Rio Rancho was a dead event? Maybe it was in one of my nightmares early in the spring during a windstorm knocking branches into my windows... ? I seriously hope that this change works for Rio Rancho and that the organizers of Durango can see the potential to get their event up to 50 teams (with their appropriate changes). That would be a cool deal for both organizations and for the comp teams. And I'm not kidding about this one. Mark in Durango, how can we help you. Your heart is in the right place, just let us now. Steve

I think the organizers should work together and dub it as "The First Double header BBQ Comp in America!". Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday! That would be a fun time. Tyering (spelling?) but fun.

Good idea, except it wouldn't be the first. There have been several already that were Fri/Sat, Sat/Sun comps within a 100-150 miles of each other, or less. Waterloo and La Porte, Iowa events were 15 miles apart July 16, 17, and 18th.

I have already suggested to Mark that he create partnerships with both the Williams, AZ and Rio Rancho, NM contests and work out some kind of deal to get teams to participate in both contests.
Williams, AZ and Rio Rancho, NM are going to be held on the same day and both would be great lead ins to Durango.

Wasn't aware of the Williams dates, but did talk to Mark about opportunities in 2011. Seems like a good set-up for Durango for 2011. With the right location, and backing of the City of Durango, it could easily be a 50 team event. (just guessing on that part) Steve

That could make for quite a "parade" up Unser Blvd and north on Hwy 550 to Durango. Might even call it the BBQ Convoy! Steve
